The Council for Higher Education in Israel at its meeting on February 11, 2025, has officially approved the establishment of the School of Medicine at the University of Haifa. This historical decision will have a profound impact on all University of Haifa Faculties, fostering academic excellence through quality of the faculty members and students who will study with us, and also in terms of future fundraising.
Named after its generous foundation sponsors Herta and Paul Amir, New School of Medicine at the University of Haifa will address Israel’s acute shortage of physicians and tackle the critical healthcare needs in northern Israel. Future medical students will be trained in the Carmel Medical Center, in the framework of strategic partnership between the University of Haifa and Clalit Health Services – Israel’s largest state-mandated health service organization.
The university is proud to welcome Prof. Haim Bitterman, the founding dean of the School of Medicine, who is joining its ranks; Prof. Avi Karni from the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Natural Sciences, who will serve as deputy dean; and Mr. Nimrod Lahav, the Head of the School of Medicine.
The foundation of the new medical school received extensive press coverage in Israel as well as in an international media: THEJ.CA, Times of Israel, The Jerusalem Post: 1, 2, The Boston Pach, Jewish News Syndicate (JNS), MSN, All Israel.
