Recycling and multi-use activities at the University of Haifa
SDG Highlights
Orange bin on the campus
Description
- Recycling stations and orange bins :
In Israel are daily produced millions of packages made of different materials such as: plastic, metal and beverage cartons. These materials will take a long time to degrade (tens to hundreds of years!) if at all but they are recyclable. Each person produces an average of 2 kg of waste per day and the packaging waste occupies a large volume in the landfill.
In recent years, we have been able to reduce the amount of packaging waste that goes to the landfill, with the help of a small but significant change by each and every one of us, which is the separation of the packaging and its recycling. When the packaging is collected separately, the packaging waste arrives as clean as possible at the sorting station and it is easier to separate it for recycling.
When there is a quality raw material, there are also those who will absorb it and a process of circular economy is created, while the raw material does not end its life in a landfill but gets a “new life”. A short video attached explaining what is “gained” from separating the plastic: https://youtu.be/uL3NCps6vOY
As part of SDG 12 goal and as a step to its implementation at our university, we have coordinated recycling stations in central locations throughout the campus and large orange bins have been placed, by courtesy of the Haifa Municipality. From now on it is easier for all of us to separate packaging, increase the scope of waste recycling and help protect the environment. More information on the locations and types of waste intended for the orange bins please find on Operations Unit site
- Cafeterias Incentivize Multi-Use Cups :
A new initiative of the Operations Unit towards a green campus encourages faculty, staff and students to use multi-use cups for drinks purchased at 9 locations on campus. The student union cafeteria gives a 50% discount to those who bring their own multi-use cups. It is hoped that this dynamic will expand to other private on-campus food vendors.
