Waste Management

The University of Haifa operates in accordance with relevant Israeli legislation and policies,  including the “Environmental Policy” advocated by the Ministry of Environment. In accordance with this policy, the University of Haifa is actively pursuing the following initiatives:

Landfill

  • Minimize, by maximizing all previous categories: Reduction, Reuse, Recycle & Energy Recovery

Minimize use of plastic plates, bottles, cups and utensils

  • Food Court: Businesses on campus utilize reusable materials. (Reference – Annex 1 – Generic “Sustainability Annex” to contracts with food suppliers on campus)
  • Water fountains are located throughout the campus to encourage the use of reusable water bottles (Reference – Annex 2 – Water fountain list)
  • Staff are encouraged to use reusables cups. University branded cups are available, and so are cup washing machines in kitchenets (over 37 units). (Reference – Annex 3 – Reusable branded cups & cup washing machine)
  • Procurement department purchases only biodegradable cups (Reference – This document)

Minimize food waste

  • Food Court: Businesses on campus have strategies minimize food waste (Reference – Annex 1 – Generic “Sustainability Annex” to contracts with food suppliers on campus)

Sustainable food supply chain

  • Food Court: Businesses on campus have policies to purchases of food items from vendors that have a “Sustainable food supply chain” (Reference – Annex 1 – Generic “Sustainability Annex” to contracts with food suppliers on campus)
  • Procurement department favor purchases of food items from vendors that have a ” Sustainable food supply chain” policy (Reference – This document)

Paperless office, digitization

  • Various activities & procedures throughout the administration various departments have been transformed from Paper Oriented, requiring paper forms, to Paper Free digitized processes. (Reference – This document)

Reuse furniture

  • Reuse furniture policy when renovating and/or re-purposing laboratories, classrooms & offices. The old furniture is stored on site. Before purchasing new furniture, the use of existing furniture is evaluated. (Reference – This document)
