תיאור: Background: The use of dietary and herbal supplements (DHS) is common among the general population and among hospitalized patients with specific morbid conditions. DHS may induce side effects and potential interactions with conventional drugs. Until now, no study has been published in the literature about DHS use among candidates for bariatric surgery. Objective: To evaluate and characterize the use of DHS among patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional prospective study of a cohort of hospitalized patients undergoing bariatric surgery in the surgical department of Bnai-Zion Medical Center, Haifa, Israel. A questionnaire focusing on DHS consumption was structured by a multidisciplinary team of researchers and administered to patients by a researcher specifically trained in anamnesis of DHS use in a multicultural context. Results: Of the 252 hospitalized patients approached, 237 (compliance rate 94%) consented to fill in the questionnaires. DHS use during the year before bariatric surgery was reported by 85 respondents (36%). DHS use was significantly more common in women, patients over the age of 50 years, and patients with cardiovascular comorbidity. Most DHS users (68%) reported continuous DHS use during the week before surgery (23%), during the 2-7 days before surgery (20%), and on the day of hospitalization (40%), while 8% continued using DHS during their hospitalization. Conclusions: Prevalence of DHS use is significant among patients hospitalized for bariatric surgery. This use may have adverse effects during the perioperative period, partly because of interactions with patients' medications and the surgery/anesthesia procedure. © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2016.
